ABOUT THE BOOK

Agroforestry is collective name for land use systems in which woody perennials (tree including fruit trees, shrubs, palins, bamboos, etc.) are deliberately combined on the same land management unit with herbaceous crops and/or animals either in some from of spatial arrangement or temporal sequence.

Agroforestry systems helps the resource poor farmers to cope up with the complete loss of crops due to drought, reduces soil and water loss, utilizes off-season precipitation and meet the requirement of fuel-wood, small timber, fruits, fodder and feed for livestock  besides food production. Tree component of the system result in improvement in the microclimate of the whole system and also improves and stabilizes the income of the farmers.

The book deals with the fundamentals of agroforestry and is a basically meant for beginners to acquaint them with agroforestry systems, land use management as related to agroforestry systems, management techniques, agroecological classification, harvesting and marketing of agroforestry products.

While revising the cureent edition of the book enough care has been taken to incorporats the contents of syllabus approved by the 5th Dean’s Committee of ICAR.
