Description

ABOUT THE BOOK

Forest is a distinctive association of plant communities. This vegetation is developed and arranged in accordance with definite biological laws.  The galloping human and livestock population has led to shrinking per capita availability of land, deteriorating quality of land and water resources, shortage of fuelwood, fodder, timber and other tree based products. As a result various kinds of pollutions, greenhouse effect etc. are threatening the balance of ecosystem.  Trees have tremendous potential to overcome degradation of natural resources besides meeting human needs.  Looking to change of emphasis, ICAR constituted Fifth Dean’s Committee to review the prevalent course curriculum for agriculture and horticultural education and based on the recommendations, subject panels were constituted to develop appropriate course curriculum and syllabi for different areas of agriculture and horticulture science at undergraduate levels. The panel has identified INTRODUCTION TO FORESTRY as an important course. In continuation of this exercise, it was pertinent to develop relevant literature on TEXTBOOK OF INTRODUCTION TO FORESTRY. To fulfil the requirement of this course for B.Sc. (Ag.) as well as those of B.Sc. (Hort.) degree, this book entitled “TEXTBOOK OF INTRODUCTION TO  FORESTRY” is being brought out to meet the entire requirements of Syllabi Recommended by 5th Dean’s Committee of ICAR.

This book has been written with undergraduate students of agriculture and horticulture in colleges and universities in mind but it will also equally suit the requirements of practitioners and preachers of tree culture on scientific lines.

I hope that this effort shall benefit not only students of agriculture, horticulture and forestry but also all those who are involved in the production and promotion of forestry culture in India.
