Description

PREFACE

Presently, in an age characterized by rapid technological progress and a burgeoning global population, the intersection of agricultural innovation and strategic communication has become a cornerstone of food security. Agriculture has evolved beyond traditional cultivation into a sophisticated, data-driven industry. Consequently, the success of modern farming depends heavily on the efficient transmission of knowledge from research laboratories to the field. Text Book of Agricultural Journalism  is designed as a definitive guide to bridge this divide, equipping students, media professionals, and extension agents with the skills to translate complex scientific advancements into actionable information.

The textbook is organized into seven thematic chapters, beginning with an exploration of the functions and philosophy of journalism within the agricultural sector (Chapter 1). It then addresses the ethical imperatives of the profession, emphasizing the journalist’s role in influencing policy and public perception (Chapter 2), before examining the enduring significance of print media through newspapers and magazines (Chapter 3).

The middle sections of the book prioritize the evidence-based nature of the craft. Readers are provided with scholarly guidance on information synthesis, investigative research, and the intricacies of interviewing subject-matter experts (Chapter 4). The curriculum then transitions into the artistry of storytelling (Chapter 5) and the strategic use of visual media, including photography and data visualization, to enhance accessibility and impact (Chapter 6). The text concludes by grounding these creative efforts in the technical realities of editorial production, copy editing, and publication design (Chapter 7). The chapters are independently delved with relevant lessons for the students of all students at graduate levels across the disciplines of agricultural sciences.

By harmonizing theoretical depth with hands-on methodology, this volume serves as both an academic resource and a professional field manual. It is my sincere hope that this work empowers a new generation of communicators to not merely document the agricultural landscape, but to serve as essential conduits for building sustainable, resilient, and informed food systems across the globe revolutionize the agricultural communication system.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Text Book of Agricultural Journalism serves as a comprehensive resource designed to bridge the gap between technical agricultural knowledge and effective public communication. In an era where food security and sustainable farming are global priorities, this text provides the essential framework for journalists to translate complex scientific data into accessible, actionable information for farmers and the public.

The book is structured into seven thematic chapters that follow a logical progression, starting from the theoretical foundations of journalism. It defines the unique role of an agricultural journalist—not merely as a reporter, but as a development catalyst. By examining professional ethics and the societal impact of agricultural media, the text emphasizes the responsibility inherent in informing the rural and urban sectors alike.

Moving from theory to application, the book delves into the craft of media production. Readers learn how to gather information through scientific abstracting and field interviews, and how to master the art of storytelling—specifically through news and feature writing. A significant portion of the text is dedicated to readability and visual communication, recognizing that the efficacy of a message depends on its presentation. By covering technical aspects such as photo composition, data visualization, and editorial copy-editing, the book ensures that journalists can produce content that is both readable and visually compelling.

The inclusion of an extensive “Practical” section transforms the volume into a hands-on manual. Through 14 structured exercises—ranging from proofreading and headline writing to layout design and event coverage—students are given the tools to transition from academic study to professional practice. This dual focus on theoretical depth and technical rigor makes Text Book of Agricultural Journalism an indispensable guide for students, extension workers, and communication professionals striving to advance the agricultural sector through informed and ethical media practices.
