ABOUT THE BOOK

Microbiology is relatively a new branch of biology. There are very few books dealing with the basic principles on various aspects of microbiology. This book aims at presenting the many facets of microbial activities which have direct as well as indirect effects on well being of man kind. It also outlines certain microbiological activities in soil and food. This book covers brief basic and relevant information on the subject for the benefit of graduate students studying microbiology.

This book contains 14 chapters covering the fundamentals in different aspects of microbiology pertaining to the degree syllabus in the fields of agriculture, biology and microbiology. Chapter 4 provides the basic information on Culture media. Chapter 5 & 6 gives an over view of prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell structure respectively. Chapter 7 & 8 are about microbial Nutrition and growth & virology respectively. Bacterial genetics and soil microbiology come under Chapter 9 & 10. Chapter 11 & 12 deal with biofertilizers and biodegradation aspects. Chapter 13 & 14 are meant to provide brief discussions on Food and Water microbiology.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The author Dr. D.V. Subhashini received both M.Sc. (Microbiology) and Ph.D. (Microbiology) degrees from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. She started her career as a Scientist (Microbiology) in Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Dr. Subhashini has published number of research papers in various national and international journals and popular articles in scientific magazines. She has been carrying out the research for two decades. She guided several post graduate students in Microbiology for their research project work. Dr. Subhashini is a life member of several scientific societies’ viz., Indian Science Congress Association, Association of Microbiologists of India, Indian Society of Tobacco Science, Plant Protection Association of India, and Society for Bio control Advancement etc.

At present the author is working as a Senior Scientist in Central Tobacco Research Institute, Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh, India and her work is frequently cited world-wide in peer reviewed journals and books in Soil and Agricultural Microbiology.
