Description

ABOUT THE BOOK

Intellectual property (IP) refers to the creations of the human mind like inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images and designs used in commerce. Intellectual property rights are the rights given to persons over the creations of their minds. They usually give the creator an exclusive right over the use of his/her creation for a certain period. The purpose of intellectual property law is to allow the people who create and invent things to profit from their work

A right that is had by a person or by a company to have exclusive rights to use its own plans, ideas, or other intangible assets without the worry of competition, at least for a specific period of time. These rights can include copyrights, patents, trademarks, and trade secrets.

These rights may be enforced by a court via a lawsuit. The reasoning for intellectual property is to encourage innovation without the fear that a competitor will steal the idea and / or take the credit for it.

Intellectual property rights protect the interests of creators by giving them property rights over their creations. Generally speaking, IP law aims at safeguarding creators and other producers of intellectual goods and services by granting them certain time limited rights to control the use made of those productions.

With the establishment of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the importance and role of the intellectual property protection has been crystallized in the Trade-Related Intellectual Property Systems (TRIPS) Agreement. Realizing the need and importance of IPR the ICAR has introduced a course on IPR at graduate levels in all SAUs and agricultural colleges in India. The book provides much needed information for graduates in agriculture, horticulture, forestry etc.
