Modern horticulture may be defined as a part of agricultural science, which deals with the production, utilization, and improvement of fruits, vegetables, flowers, ornamentals, plantation crops, medicinal and aromatic plants etc.
Looking to the importance of horticulture in nutritional and economic security of the country ICAR has introduced a elementary course PRINCIPLES OF HORTICULTURE at UG level to train our graduates about the fundamentals of horticulture. This course will equip students with knowledge and skills in the field of Horticulture.
Students will get an exposure to vocational/professional course on the production of fruits and vegetables, which will motivate students to come up as entrepreneurs in the area of nursery raising or commercial horticulture.This course is an effort to sensitize student in the field of horticulture. The book will be useful and serve as guiding force for the students to choose career in the area of horticulture and they may further pursue higher degree in this area. This book has been designed to provide entry level job skills to the students and will help to meet the human resource requirement for horticulture sector.
We hope the students will find the learning material to their reading taste and will be helpful in developing the entrepreneurship skills and will motivate them to choose horticulture as an enterprise.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Laxmi Lal (Somani) (b.1945) Retired Director (Rl) & Dean PG Studies, MPUAT Udaipur has over 400 papers published in National and International Journals/ Symposia, etc. and 15 dozen of books to his credit in different disciplines of Agriculture and allied field. He held different positions in MPUAT, has Spreaded highly innovative ideas, and programmes for development of Agriculture. Prof. Somani has been honoured with several awards.
