Description

ABOUT THE BOOK

The book starts with a brief overview of the history of genomics. The biological information present in DNA sequences extracted by different computational tools. We list the completed and ongoing genome sequencing projects and show how little is actually known, even about simple genomes. We then discuss the methods of genome editing, emphasizing the evolutionary principles of protein function assignments. The book then proceeds to discuss the different biological databases that store and organize genomic data, with their unique advantages and pitfalls. Databases and bioinformatics tools available on the Internet allow a researcher to find mutations, build three-dimensional structures of encoded proteins, get the relevant information and literature related to genes of interest and so on. Genome sequencing projects eventually throw up lists of genes with predicted functions with different degrees of certainty. A list usually contains a sizable number of genes that have unknown functions.

The history of annotation and comparative analysis of the sequenced genomes credibly revealed that the quality and efficacy of the biological data mainly depend on the employed methods and the depth of interpretation of the results obtained by computer methods. Functional annotation of genomes might be the most apparent and the computational genomics; it is not just a supporting service for functional genomics, but an individual discipline itself, with its own fundamental goals.

The aim of this book is to provide basic fundamentals in genomics to graduate students of science discipline. We have developed this book to give basic knowledge about structural genomics, functional genomics and basic principles of bioinformatics. We expect that this book can be a starting point for computational genomics students and a guide for further data analysis in more specific topics in genomics. In addition to this, for more experienced person might want to refer to this book when she or he needs to do a certain type of analysis where she or he does not have prior experience.
