ABOUT THE BOOK
Agronomy is a discipline, which has agriculture as an integrated part. It deals with the edaphic and climatic factors, which include understanding of soil properties, crop interactions with soil factor, fertilizer requirements for the crops, application and timing of fertilizers, insect/pest control as well as pathogenic control in the crops. It deals with the cultivation of crops in order to conserve the natural resources and protect the environment. It covers intercultural practices related to the various crops.
Very often, we ignore or miss the basic knowledge or information on which the multi-storied, multidisciplinary approach of crop production stands. It is strenuous strive to keep pace with the progress of such a vast subject like agronomy which is in practice throughout the world. Efforts have been made in this textbook to collect; collate new concepts of agronomy into a single unit understandable to the undergraduate students and useful as a remedial course to the workers and scientist of agriculture, and allied disciplines. This book includes all the relevant components of agronomy. It includes appropriate crop rotation, irrigation and drainage, classification of crops, cropping systems, crop rotations as well as control of weeds.
All our strains will be worthy if the text containing basic concepts and scope of agronomy, classification of crops, sowing and planting, crop growth and development, tilth and tillage, nutrient management, weed management, irrigation and water management, organic farming, crop rotations and cropping systems concisely dealt in separate chapters becomes helpful for whom this is made. The book will be very helpful for B.Sc. Agriculture students throughout the country as it covers nearby the entire syllabus for Agronomy courses framed by ICAR as suggested by 5th Dean’s Committee.
There are various resources in agriculture, which need proper management techniques. In agronomy water, management and irrigation systems are essential to know. Manure and fertilizer management is an essential component of agricultural development, which has been covered in this book. There is an account of various crops like cereals, oil seeds, pulses, plantation crops, cash crops and spices and their practices.
Farm machinery and tillage operations and their importance have not been ignored either. This book gives a glimpse of modern agricultural techniques such as sustainable agriculture, Organic Farming.

EDITORS PROFILE
Piyush Choudhary has completed his Master’s and Ph.D. in the discipline of Agronomy from the prestigious Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur (Rajasthan). He has an outstanding academic as well as leadership record. He was adjudged as University Gold Medalist for securing highest OGPA during B.Sc. He was also awarded with Bhamashah Award by MMCF, Udaipur for securing highest percentage in B.Sc. as well as at district level by District Administration, Bhilwara for the same. He also acted as University Coordinator-cum- University President of MPUAT in the state cabinet of AIASA and served as Research Representative in Central Students’ Union of MPUAT. He was also elected as College President in CLSU of CoA, Bhilwara. Along with his academic carrier, he is a very good sportsman. He bagged gold medal (basketball) in the XX All India Inter Agri Sports Meet and represented MPUAT for four times. He has been chosen as university Ambassador for various campaigns and programmes. Along with this as an organizing secretary, he has organized various training, conferences, and webinars at state, national and international level. He has published 8 research papers and several popular articles in reputed National and International journals. He has worked on the novel approaches of nutrient management by using nanotechnology tools during his Ph.D. research and has presented his research work in International conferences. He has a very bright future ahead.
Dilip Singh, Professor Agronomy retired in recent past as Dean Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and technology Udaipur on 28th February 2022. Prior to his retirement he served university as Head, Department of Agronomy, Assistant Dean Student Welfare, Project Incharge, All India Coordinated Research Project on Maize and many other prestigious positions of administration in College and University. He has devoted more than three decade for intensely working on sugarcane, medicinal & aromatic crops and corn crop including specialty corn viz., sweet corn, pop corn, baby corn, besides quality protein corn crop and completely refined and developed their packages and practice. He has been instrumental in transfer of these latest technologies to farmer’s field through laying out front line demonstration, field days, trainings, radio talks, and print media. The field experience gained by farmers has helped in popularization of specialty corn in the state and improving productivity of sugarcane, medicinal & aromatic and maize crop many fold in the state. His research work was accepted at international level four times and thereafter he presented the work at Makassar Indonesia, Bangladesh, Nanning China and Thailand. He had been actively involved in teaching UG and PG courses and guiding of M.Sc. and Ph.D. students. Dr. Singh has credit of ISA, councillor for two years, organisation of many workshops, and National & International conferences, seminar and symposium at MPUAT, Udaipur as Organizing Secretary and completion of many research projects successfully. He has attended many workshops, National and International seminar, symposiums, conferences, summer and winter schools during his 34 years of service period. Dr. Singh has been awarded by university twice on republic day for his outstanding contribution in research teaching and extension activities.
L.L. Somani is Retired Director, Resident Instructions, MPUAT, Udaipur. He went To Waite Agricultural Research Institute, Adelaide, Australia to undertake Post-doctoral work (1975-77). He has over 400 research and technical articles to his credit. He has authored/edited over 18 dozen of books related to Agriculture.
